Once you get the blog up and running, maintenance doesn’t have to take much time. BUT it still takes time. time is sacred, and i find it even more sacred now that I am a mom. It has been a huge adjustment for me to set a bedtime and wakeup time for myself with an infant who doesn’t like to sleep. Many people tell new mothers to sleep when the baby sleeps, but honestly this didn’t help. I was still tired all the time and wasn’t getting anything accomplished which just increased my stress levels. once I established parameters for sleep, I then looked at how I could better manage the other moments here and there. By staying up a little later I could write. By waking a little earlier I could go to the gym or draw. I could do the dishes right after little blondie was fed and content. Now when naptimes don’t happen or when i am tied down with an infant cradled in my arms, I don’t think about everything that I could be doing with that time. Instead I can just love the peaceful moments. and honestly, I don’t go to sleep that late or wakeup that early. I have just carved out a few pockets of time to devote to the things I want to do. Blogging is one of them. Blogging doesn’t have to take up a lot of time. as in writing a novel, I find it helps if I already know what I am going to say. Instead of staring at a blank screen, I think about it when i’m changing a diaper or washing dishes. Having a pad of paper on me at all times doesn’t work for me. But I figure if i can’t remember it later, it probably wasn’t that great a thought to begin with. Later when i have those 5 minutes, I can just type my thoughts down, edit them when I make another few minutes and it will come together. Other ideas of how to spend those 5 minutes for blog upkeep include things like: creating a poll reviewing other blogs out there like yours reviewing other blogs out there that you want yours to be like comment on someone else’s blog reply to a comment on your blog better organize your site make friends with those you admire compose an about me page just take a moment and breathe do a few leg squats get a glass of water encourage someone gather items for a care package have other ways to spend your five minutes, i’d love to hear them. <heart> kate

Honesty is the Best Policy, on Online or Artist or Author Platforms, Topic

Honesty is the best policy, to yourself. It doesn’t help anyone to write a book or blog about a computer software that you aren’t interested in. Its ok if you don’t know anything about the thing you want to write about, you can always learn. BUT it will be obvious if you don’t care about it. Embarrassingly, it took me a while to figure out what I do care enough about to write. I had to take a long hard look at what drove me, what I naturally studied or read about, what I thought about when I didn’t have to and most importantly what message I wanted to get across. One of my problems is that I really don’t know myself very well. I know what my goals are, my expectations of myself, my history, but I am not very good about reading me at the present. After all this study and research, I realized I was making things way too complicated. If I try to be something I am not, it won’t work, won’t stick and will all-around bomb. Go simple. What will make today a good day? An event, a project, a book, an activity, a person, a place. Start there. In the end a pattern will emerge, your style, your motif, your YOU. For my day today to be great, I had to exercise my body and mind. So here I am, gym – check, blog post – check, now I need to log some novel time. Has a pattern emerged yet? prolly not, but I am being myself. The rest will follow. be yourself <heart> Kate
Breaking the Rules #2: And My Blog Topic Is…..What is Your Blog Topic?
- 15
- Nov
“They say” to write a blog about one central topic. This may sound like you shouldn’t write about anything else but that one specific topic. I think that that would make for a very stale and boring blog – to read about and write about one narrow field. I heard a great tip once I hope to follow. Pick one main topic, but write about a variety of things. Just make sure that you always bring that one central point in somewhere, reference it or somehow let us know how the other stuff fits into the bigger picture. In fact this sounds a lot like the pieces of a novel, but that is a topic for another day. So… some of the things I’ll discuss include, in no particular order – Niches. Topics. Blogging. Writing. Prioritizing. Plotting. Characters. Reading. Etc. Also, you might hear about my other loves: art and parenting and marriage and re furbishing and re fashioning and the list goes on, ’cause I like lots of things. I know that “they say” also not to bring your personal life into your quasi professional blog-website, but, and you can let me know what you think, I like hearing about the author every once in a while. You know, getting the behind-the-scenes look at running their show. Variety doesn’t have to be random, <heart> Kate
Motivation 101: “Just Go for It!”
- 09
- Nov
My mantra lately has been to just try. Try to be the super-mom, the awesome wife, housekeeper AND try to be me. I haven’t been optimistic. Today I remembered what my determination and perseverance has accomplished before, so I am starting to get pumped. I can do it. I just need to try. I could say a lot more, but this does a better job. Go me, go me… {visualize happy dance here} <heart> Kate
Who Are You?, on Building an Online or Artist or Author Platform
- 05
- Nov
One of the things that I come across all the time is that it is important for authors (and many other creative types with a profit goal) to build their own platforms. But what is an author platform? It is just what it sounds like, something that elevates the author and brings attention to them and their work. (Blogs, websites, newsletters, appearances, etc…) After reading a lot of information about platform building for authors, I have noticed that the first thing you should do is “Identify Your Target Audience”. But how does one do that? I think the best way to start is to identify a few things about yourself. – What are you known for now, as an author, friend, worker… and what do you want to be known for? – What are you interested in? What things do you find yourself doing when you aren’t really thinking about it? (Writing, Drawing, Baking, Cleaning… Bird-watching…) – Why are you writing? What message are you trying to tell? – Who is going to read what you write… or more informatively, who is NOT going to read what you write? All these questions should help you narrow down your “focus” or “niche”. Maybe you 1) are goofy 2) love baking and 3) trying to tell the world about homelessness. So maybe you focus your site on funny things that happen as you make mass amounts of food to feed people living on the streets. With that in mind, you may not get young children or profit-minded individuals interested but that just means that your website/blog doesn’t have neon children’s games or “how to get your franchise to earn 1mil$”. You have somewhat honed in your optimal readership. Granted this is just a simple, broad example and you should narrow down your readership just a little more, but I think you get the idea. If you answer those questions honestly, you will probably come up with a unique angle to start your platform development. And don’t worry that someone else out there is using your idea. Even if someone else has the exact same answers to the questions (which is highly unlikely) the way that you both proceed with that information will naturally be different. Be Yourself <heart> Kate
Breaking the Rules #1: How Often Should I Post a Blog?
- 01
- Nov
I am new to the business of novel-writing… BUT I have been studying and researching for over two years. So, I have a lot of gathered knowledge that I would like to document and organize and maybe others can benefit from it, too. So I’m starting this blog. I really want this to be a two-way street, so please feel free to add your two cents and let me know if and what you enjoy. In fact, I’m gonna jump right on in and key you in on one of the main rules “they say” about blogging. ‘Make a post schedule and stick with it.’ Now, I’m usually a total Type-A rule follower, but I just can’t get behind that one. I can already hear “their” rebuttals about how if I have chosen a topic I can write lots about then I won’t have a problem with a schedule. Well I can write all day about writing, but I’d like to spend my day doing other things too like reading and, hey actually writing my book! There are also things that I HAVE to do in a day, so I guess I lied, I couldn’t actually blog all day even if I wanted to. But the thing is, I want to enjoy my blogging experience and to not turn it into a chore. I’m not going to rope myself in, it doesn’t work for my personality. Also, if I get a subscription for anything, email, blogs, magazines… I expect content or a reason that I should choose reading this over spending my valuable time else-wise. So I’m only going to write when I feel I have something to share. You know, quality over quantity and all that jazz. So really, I might blog every day …or some days I might not blog. But I will say this, blogging is a priority. That is the important thing, and in my opinion, the rule to follow, no matter how you schedule it or don’t. Write Intentionally <heart> the ever-rebellious Kate
